Stanton supporters criticize GOP mailer featuring LGBT support

Supporters of Phoenix mayoral candidate Greg Stanton are critical of a campaign mailer sponsored by the Arizona Republican Party that they say attempts to smear Stanton because he is supported by Equality Arizona, the statewide LGBT civil rights organization.

The campaign literature supports Wes Gullett for mayor with a color photo of the candidate with a list of endorsements from 12 current and former Arizona Republican officials, including Gov. Jan Brewer and U.S. Sen. John McCain featured prominently.

The piece features a black and white photo of Stanton, listing his only support as Equality Arizona and the AFL-CIO labor union.   "We at Equality Arizona are here to proudly and loudly tell the state Republican party and Mr. Gullett that such tactics belong in the gutter, not in a critical election to determine who leads the nation's sixth largest city into a new period of growth and prosperity," said Bill MacDonald, a board member at Equality Arizona.   Stanton has voiced support of employment and housing protections, as well as domestic partner benefits and creating a registry so that LGBT couples can visit their partners in the hospital.

"I do not believe that most Republicans and Democrats support such divisive tactics, and when I am mayor, we will embrace all the diversity that is Phoenix," Stanton said. "The LGBT community will be supported and appreciated. I refuse to use divisive wedge issues to score political points. That's not leadership. It's the opposite."

Although city elections are non-partisan, Gullett is a Republican and Stanton is a Democrat.
