Arizona Women in Tune concert celebrates multicultural holidays

Arizona Women In Tune's winter concert will showcase diversity by reflecting the many cultures represented among the group's members for a holiday presentation with an international flavor. Selections will be sung in German, French, Spanish and Hebrew.

Titled "Kindle the Flame," the concert celebrating Kwanza, Hanukkah, Christmas and the Winter Solstice will be presented Dec. 10 and 11 at Faith Lutheran Church in Phoenix.

"The holidays are a time to go within and reflect on where the year has brought us. It is also a time to join with family, to kindle traditions passed down to us from past generations," said Luçik Aprahämian, the group's artistic director.

"Yet, like any fire that continues to burn, you must add new fuel. So, in this season, we celebrate our diverse cultures by bringing our heritages and new traditions to keep that fire burning," she said.

The choir will explore seasonal musical selections from around the world, including a traditional German chorale "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen (Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming)," the Spanish carol "A La Nanita Nana," a traditional and lush French carol "Le Sommeil de l'Enfant Jésus (The Sleep of the Infant Jesus)" and a contemporary rendition of the traditional Jewish prayer "Maoz Tsur (Rock of Ages)" in Hebrew.

The concert will also include seasonal favorites that the audiences will recognize and be asked to sing along.

Aprahämian said the singers were challenged by the foreign language texts. "There was a bit of tongue twisting going on, but it's actually a very enjoyable process and reflects my love of languages," she said.

The choir will explore new material with a selection of songs from Vincent Persichetti's Winter Cantata. The cantata is songs for a choir, marimba and the flute set to text taken from an ancient Japanese Haiku. The piece was inspired by a book of traditional Japanese Haikus, A Net of Fireflies.

The concert will feature flutist Jenna Daum, percussionists Alison Brightwell and Amy Pennock and the Us Gaias percussion ensemble. The event will also be the debut of the group's new pianist, Brad Smith, a doctoral candidate in collaborative piano at Arizona State University.

The choir of more than 60 members was founded in 1993.    -E
