Reveille Men's Chorus plans untraditional arrangements of holiday classics

During their 17th annual Christmas concert, the Reveille Men's Chorus in Tucson will make the holidays more colorful with gay-themed renditions of holiday songs from the 1950s and '60s.

The concert, titled "A Vintage Christmas," will be presented Dec. 3 and 4 at Grace-St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Tucson.

Mark Schaye, president of the chorus' board of directors, said the choir will inject the Reveille Men's Chorus' humor into traditional holiday songs. "It helps to get the Christmas spirit kicked off early," Schaye said.

The choir will sing a parody about how daddy, not mommy, is caught kissing Santa Claus. The group will also sing untraditional arrangements of classic Christmas songs, such as The First Noel, Little Saint Nick and The Little Drummer Boy.

"It's not what you hear on the radio during the Christmas season, Schaye said. "It has a little more of an artistic spin on it."

Shawn Cullen is the choir's artistic director and pianist Kyungsun Choi is the accompanist.

The Reveille Men's Chorus started in 1995 as a gay men's chorus, but it has also become a community organization that helps to spread awareness about HIV/HIDS and human rights issues. Schaye said the organization participates in benefits for organizations such as the Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network.

The chorus is open to community men with singing ability.

Proceeds from the concerts will benefit the chorus.    -E
