Sherry Vine gets show on here!, but first the drag star will perform in Phoenix

A new television show starring Sherry Vine should demonstrate that drag queens are multitalented, according to the man behind the drag star.

"So many drag queens have a strong theater background, but most people don't know it," said Keith Levy, who performs as Sherry Vine. "They think, ‘He's just a man putting on a dress.'"

The TV show, She's Living for This, will premiere on Feb. 24 on here! TV.

Promoting the show is sure to be part of Vine's appearance Feb. 17 at the Rock in Phoenix.

Levy said that the TV show is a cabaret variety show modeled after shows such as The Carol Burnett Show and The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, which were popular in the 1970s.

Levy is known creating parodies of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez and Madonna songs. He said the TV show, which will feature comedic sketches that draw from pop cultural references, will allow him to portray different characters and personas.

Levy said his TV show will showcase a range of entertainers. First season guest stars will include drag queen Lady Bunny, actor Wilson Cruz, drag performer and cabaret singer Joey Arias and puppeteer Basil Twist.

The AZ Gender Outlaws will appear on the show early in the first season in a segment dedicated to original videos, he said.

"I like that there's a nice variety of drag out there," said Levy, who performed with the Gender Outlaws in May in Phoenix. "It would be so boring if everybody did the same thing and looked the same."

Levy said the show has been in the works for a year, but he has been thinking about doing it for years. "It is something that has been a lifelong fantasy," Levy said.

A native of Maryland, Levy has been doing drag professionally for 20 years. His weekly Sunday drag show at Barracuda is one of the longest running live singing/comedy drag shows in New York City.

Levy started doing drag while he was studying for a master's degree in acting at the University of Southern California. He said that he was inspired to start drag while working for a project for his acting class.

"I responded to the physical change, the physicality of it," Levy said. "It was head to toe like wearing a mask."

He said his former roommate suggested the name Sherry. Later he took the name Vine after a street in Los Angeles, on which sat a decrepit former whorehouse called "the Sherry."

Levy defined Sherry Vine as a sensual, frank and amiable persona that he uses as a vehicle to express himself in ways that he isn't able to as a guy.

"Sherry Vine is a Las Vegas sex kitten showgirl with a heart of gold," Levy said. "Some people have described the look as ‘Barbie on Crack.'"

From the start, Levy said he incorporated live singing and acting into his performances.

Although he initially wanted to be a film and TV actor, Levy said drag has been the right path for him.

"I love it. I just absolutely love it," Levy said. "If I didn't like it, if I wasn't happy, if it was a chore, I wouldn't do it."    -E
