Sisterzz Twisted drag troupe stages its first holiday show

For the first time in its 10-year history, the Sisterzz Twisted drag troupe will get audiences in the mood for the holidays and give back to the community with a twisted extravaganza.

The show will be staged Dec. 9 and 10 at Cash Inn Country.

The show will feature 19 Sisterzz Twisted drag kings and femmes who will be doing solo and group numbers to promote the spirit of the holidays. Many of the numbers will have a gay twist.

Rebecca Bedford, a troupe member for seven years, said until this year, the drag king troupe has done annual Halloween and spring shows.

Bedford, also known as the femme Bodacious Becky, said the group plans to bring the Halloween spirit into Christmas with a medley of songs from the movie Nightmare Before Christmas.

Bedford said that audiences should expect a lighthearted but meaningful show. "It's not going to be dark, but it's going to be weird," Bedford said.

Troupe member JC Ryden, who performs as drag king Freddy Prinze Charming, said many of the songs in the show aren't traditional Christmas songs, but the troupe brings Christmas themes into them.

"We are going to make it a holiday song, and you will never get it out of your head," said Ryden, a troupe member for three years.

The drag king troupe will be performing three group numbers, including a rockabilly swing dance number, a performance with troupe members dressed as elves and a live singing performance to an unconventional Christmas song about coming out during the holidays.

Bedford said the troupe's six new members will perform a group number to the song Ho Ho Ho by the Dan Band.

Troupe femme Camille Leon will be performing in her first large-scale production with Sisterzz Twisted during the holiday show. Leon said the troupe allows her to be part of a small community within the gay community and use her acting skills.

"That's what really separates us from other drag shows," Leon said. "We really try to bring more theatrical aspects to it."

Proceeds will benefit the YEP! House, and the troupe will be collecting blankets, shoes, jeans and supplies for the center.    -E
