U.S. women's team brings soccer to Arizona for match with Sweden

Soccer fever will hit Phoenix when the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team plays its first match in Arizona since 2000 against one of the world's other top teams.

The match between the U.S. and Sweden will be Nov. 19 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

The U.S. team attracted attention earlier this year when it placed second to Japan in the Women's World Cup in Germany.

The team is preparing for 2012 Olympic qualifying competition. The Phoenix match will the U.S. team's final international match of 2011.

Sweden, which placed third in the World Cup, has defeated the U.S. team in two previous matches this year.

The match will mark the return to Arizona of U.S. defender Amy LePeilbet, who made a mark on women's soccer at Arizona State University. She was a three-time first-team All-Pac 10 selection during her college career from 2000 to 2003.

U.S. team head coach Pia Sundhage has called up 30 players, including all 21 members of the World Cup team, for a training camp that started on Nov. 7 in Phoenix.

The Valley's fan base for soccer is diverse, including Latinos, gays and lesbians, young girls and "Scottsdale soccer moms," according to Scott Norton, director of marketing and public relations for Global Spectrum at University of Phoenix Stadium.

"It's certainly a soccer market," he said.

Reaching the LGBT community is a priority for U.S. Soccer, Norton said. "I'm working directly with U.S. Soccer marketing, and it is a directive of theirs. They certainly embrace the community," he said.

Norton said more than 10,000 tickets for the match were sold within the first three weeks of going on sale. He said they hope to sell 20,000 tickets and noted that a U.S. Men's Team match against Mexico in 2007 attracted 55,000 fans.

The last time the U.S. Women's Soccer Team competed in Arizona was when they played to a 1-1 draw against Japan.

Fans are invited to attend an open practice of the U.S. team from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 18. To attend the practice, RSVP at www.ussoccer.com.    -E
