Visiting Palm Springs

Shopping, culture and nature are among the reasons to make a trip to Palm Springs.

By Glenn Gullickson

5 Things to do

Desert oasis offers nightlife, shopping and sightseeing

El Paseo

1. Go shopping

Shopping ranges from the boutiques and galleries along El Paseo, the exclusive shopping district in Palm Desert, to shops in downtown Palm Springs that offer art, clothes and souvenirs. There's even a Gay Mart. Bargain hunters will find hundreds of stores at the nearby Cabazon Outlets.

Palm Springs Tram

2. Explore nature

For a change in altitude, take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway over the cliffs of Chino Canyon in the San Jacinto Mountains. The 10-minute trip in a rotating car starts at 2,643 feet and goes up to 8,516 feet. At the top, visitors will find a wilderness hiking trail and restaurant.

Joshua Tree National Park, just west of Palm Springs, is known for its exposed granite monoliths as well as the namesake Joshua trees. The park can be explored by car or on 12 self-guided nature trails. The park offers rock climbing, mountain biking and camping. At Keys Ranch, there's a guided tour the Desert Queen Ranch, which the Keys family worked for 60 years.

Closer to the city, Tahquitz Canyon has a two-mile loop trail which leads to a 60-foot waterfall.

Palm Springs Spa Casino

3. Take some chances

The Spa Resort and Casino is in the center of Palm Springs, but gamblers also have a choice of at least four other nearby casinos offering slot machines and table games.

The casinos located along Interstate 10 include the Morongo Casio Resort & Spa in Cabazon, Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa in Rancho Mirage, Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio and Spotlight 29 Casino in Coachella. The casinos feature dining options and showrooms and most have hotels.

4. Get some culture

The Palm Springs Art Museum features collections of modern, Western and Native American art. Galleries include works by Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and others.

In the same complex, the Annenberg Theatre stages touring theater, music and dance performances. In Palm Desert, the McCallum Theatre also has a schedule of touring shows.

The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies is a celebration of music, dance and comedy, but here the performers range in age from 58 to 82.

If your idea of culture leans more toward nightlife, Palm Springs has gay clubs for just about any taste.

The living desert

5. See the sights

The Living Desert features animals and plants from deserts around the world, including the four deserts of North America. The Village WaTuTu, a replica of a village in Africa, has a petting zoo.

Sightseeing tours can take visitors to the wind turbines that fill the San Gorgonio Pass or provide a look at the San Andreas Fault.

Palm Springs is a mecca for its mid-century architecture and there are walking tours of neighborhoods of the style. Or you can live it — some houses are available as short-term rentals.
