We Love Arizona

To mark the state's Centennial, which falls on Valentine's Day, the LGBT community sends a Valentine to Arizona.

We Love Arizona

100 from the LGBT community mark 100 years of statehood with a Valentine to Arizona

It's a quirk of history that Arizona became the nation's 48th state on Valentine's Day 100 years ago on Feb. 14, 1912. But perhaps it's appropriate that statehood is celebrated on the holiday of love. Whether we're natives or drawn from elsewhere, Arizonans love their state.

It's not always easy to love Arizona, especially for the LGBT community, what with a Legislature that makes it difficult for single people to adopt, would deny benefits for domestic partners, struggles with the issue of protecting LGBT students from bullies and won't even consider marriage equality.

But somehow most people find a way to look beyond that. Arizona is home. We love the state and we want to work to make it better.

To mark Arizona's Centennial, 100 people from Arizona's LGBT community and our allies — including Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and his wife Nicole — shared their feelings about the state for this special section.

In a survey, they were asked what brought them to Arizona, what they love about the state, the special places and memories that the Copper State holds for them as well as their hopes for the future.

The answers may not be surprising, but they provide a glimpse into the LGBT community. A few of us are natives, but many are from all over, brought here by parents or partners or the desire to start over. We do every kind of work and are involved in just about everything. We love Arizona's weather, at least from October to April. We can't get enough of the scenery, but we also love the urban landscape. And we wish for a future where moderate politics and equality reign.

To lead off this section, Rep. Matt Heinz talked about what brought him to Arizona and the work that he's doing in the Legislature.

On the following pages, 100 people from the state's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and allied community send the community's Valentine to Arizona.
