1 Voice elects five new board members

Phoenix — In the first election of its kind, the membership of the 1 Voice LGBT Community Center has elected five new board members and re-elected three other directors.

New to the board are the Rev. Brad Wishon, Cary "CJ" Jones, Bill Soroka, Christine Schubert and Chris Boutwell.

Re-elected were Jimmy Gruender, Angela Harvey and Philip McGuffie. All three had been filling partial terms after being named to the board in 2011.

Three others who had been named to the board in 2011 did not stand for election. James Helper, Thom Kasch and Trudie Jackson will be leaving the board. Kasch had served as head of the center's programming.

Marisa Zelaya Tristan continues on the board as the only holdover member who has served for more than a year. The board lost eight members during 2011, a year that was marked by turmoil as the center reorganized after losing grant funding.

The board was elected at the organization's annual meeting on Dec. 19 by the membership, a group formed late last year whose members paid $25 or volunteered for 25 hours. Board members said 19 of the group's 47 members cast ballots. Previously, the board named its own members.

The board re-elected Gruender chair and Zelaya Tristan treasurer. Harvey was named vice chair and Boutwell secretary.

The board approved a budget for January and February showing income of $3,715 and expenses of $3,283 for each month.

In addition, the board approved $400 for outreach, which could include participating in the Willo Home Tour, Melrose on Seventh Avenue Street Fair and the Arizona Gay Rodeo, and $200 for a board retreat.

The board's next meeting was tentatively set for Jan. 23.
