AZWIT Fundraiser

A song from the musical ~Wicked~ inspires the theme for an Arizona Women in Tune event.

By Richard Schultz

AZWIT uses Wicked song as theme for fundraising event

Arizona Women in Tune will use the lyrics of a song from the musical Wicked as the theme for the largest single fundraiser in the organization's history.

The event titled "For Good" will be staged Oct. 22 at the Embassy Suites — Biltmore. It will feature a silent auction, dinner and live action.

Terry Gunn, executive director of the women's chorus, said the theme was taken from Wicked's song "For Good," which the group performed last year.

"We were inspired by the lyrics Because I knew you, I have been changed for good," Gunn said. "Those words, ‘for good,' speak to why we sing. We sing to deliver messages of tolerance and peace and to highlight sometimes difficult issues facing our society.

"Music adds to the culture, depth and beauty of a community, brings awareness, provokes and influences thought," Gunn said. "Simply said, we sing for the good of our community."

Lucik Aprahamian, artistic director, said proceeds from the auction will allow the group to add depth and variety to its concert programs and increase outreach to the community.

"One of our major goals for the season is to expand our programming by adding more elements, such as guest musicians and commissions," Aprahamian said.

Auctioneer Jeff Maynard will lead bidding during the live auction. Prizes include a pancake breakfast for six prepared in the winner's home by Aprahamian.

Also up for auction will be a seven-day photo safari trip to South Africa, one week in a Santa Fe resort, a chef's dinner for six, and a wine tasting for up to 12 people.

The Rev. Patrick Stout, of the Community Church of Hope, will serve as master of ceremonies.

The choir will not sing at the event. Its next concert is scheduled for Dec. 10 and 11 at Faith Lutheran Church in Phoenix.

Aprahamian said she is working with Los Angeles composer Dante De Silva on a commission for the group's March concert, which they will also present at the GALA International Festival of Choruses in July in Denver.

Founded in 1993, Arizona Women in Tune is a non-auditioned chorale group of 60 women.

Echo Magazine is among the sponsors for the event.    -E
