Bears of the Old Pueblo plans weekend event in Tucson

Up to 300 bears are expected to descend on Tucson for a long weekend escape of sun, fun, shopping and more.

The 16th La Fiesta de los Osos, organized by the Bears of the Old Pueblo, will be Jan. 12-16 at Hotel Tucson City Center InnSuites.

Larry Eberle, Fiesta committee co-chair, said the event "is a great escape from winter that allows bears, cubs and their admirers a chance to enjoy the warmth and friendliness of Tucson, while catching up with old friends and meeting new ones."

For the first time, this year's event will include a "Fur Real" dance in the hotel's ballroom. The dance will be open to the public, with proceeds benefiting Wingspan, Tucson's LGBT community center.

Also new this year will be DJ-hosted parties at the hotel's junior Olympic-sized pool, with DJ Nobody providing the music. There also will be a "Meracdo" of vendors.

The weekend will include three catered meals, entertainment, pool parties, a piñata bust event and a ranch bonfire. Tours of local attractions will also be available.

Established in 1996, La Fiesta de Los Osos was the brainchild of Robert Rowe, who was president of the Bears of the Old Pueblo at the time.

Kevin Jackson, president of the Bears of the Old Pueblo, said the Fiesta "has grown to become one of the most beloved of the ‘bear runs' in the U.S." He said the event is one of the four longest-running bear weekends in the world.

Over the past 15 years, more than 2,700 men from more than 20 countries have attended the Fiesta. Attendance is capped at 300 because Eberle that it's a number that keeps the event fun, friendly and manageable.    -E
