Benefit Competition

The TV show Fear Factor inspires events to be staged as part of a relay competition.

Competition's gross-out events inspired by Fear Factor

Participants will compete in events similar to those featured on the TV show Fear Factor during the first Who's On Top benefit sponsored by the Dating Experience.

The event will be Nov. 20 at the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix.

Celebrity hosts will be Kelsey Chavarria from Showtime's The Real L Word and Jesse Lewis IV from VH1's America's Smartest Model.

The Fear Factor-inspired relay race will include gross-out events, such as bobbing for sardines and eating chocolate covered crickets.

The relay race will have separate events for individuals, groups representing bars and children. The winners in each group will receive trophies.

Contestants will also have an opportunity to show off their physical prowess in endurance contests, such as slip and slide and tire relays.

The event will also feature a lip-synching sing-off that will challenge local drag queens' and kings' performance abilities, with the winner receiving a crown.

A portion of the money raised at the benefit will go to the Dating Experiment, an organization that counsels people in the LGBT community on how to develop healthier relationships, a better self image and more self confidence. Proceeds will also benefit 1n10 and This is H.O.W.

Courtnay Campbell, founder of the Dating Experiment, said the event is meant to bring different groups from the LGBT community together for a good cause. She said the event will allow people to meet outside a bar environment.

Campbell said she wants to help facilitate better communication and understanding between different segments of the LGBT community.

"We stand behind the banner of LGBT, but we are really divided in our community," Campbell said. "I just want to bring everyone together. We need to band together without prejudice."

Freddy Prinze Charming, also known as JC Ryden, will represent Cash Inn Country along with other members of Sisterzz Twisted at the event.

Lip-synching competition is not new to Ryden, who is the 2011 Mister Phoenix Gay Pride and a former Mister Arizona USofA MI. But eating insects will be more of a challenge for Ryden because she said she is allergic to some insects.

Ryden said that she will be dressed in drag during the lip-synching competition, but she won't attempt to do eating or endurance events in full drag makeup.

"It is hard to run, jump and bob for things when you are wearing stuff on your face," Ryden said. "The makeup would be running, and the facial hair would be coming off."    -E
