Drag stars to headline Men's Chorus concert dedicated to Trevor Project

Two veterans of RuPaul's Drag Race will headline the "Blush and Bashful" dinner concert presented by the Phoenix Men's Chorus.

Raja and Manila Luzon will perform at the event on Feb. 11 at the Hyatt Regency in Phoenix.

Raja, also known as Sutan Amrull, won the third season of the Logo TV drag competition in 2011. Manila Luzon, also known as Karl Westerberg, was the runner-up in 2011

The event will include the debut of the Men's Chorus' Trevor Project video, which features messages from local individuals and groups that were recorded during the past few months.

The chorus has dedicated its season to the Trevor Project, a national organization that provides suicide prevention services for LGBT youth, and the group will benefit from concert proceeds.

"We felt partnering with The Trevor Project would be an important way to heighten awareness about bullying, harassment in school and misuse of technology," said Daniel Ruacho, chair for the event and a member of the board for Grand Canyon Performing Arts.

Manila Luzon "The Trevor Project saves young lives through its free and confidential lifeline, in school workshops, educational materials, online resources and advocacy," Ruacho said. "We feel our organizational missions harmonize nicely together."

During the concert, the chorus will sing "It Gets Better," a song that has become a theme from the Trevor Project. "It offers young people kids hope and encouragement. It offers young people kids hope and encouragement," Ruacho said.

The chorus also will sing several songs about hope, tolerance and acceptance, including "The Awakening" and "Song of Unity."

"Each song was specifically chosen to support the event's theme, while also highlighting the array of talents within the choir," Ruacho said.

More event details:

Additional entertainment: During the cocktail hour and silent auction, cabaret singer Kristen Drathman will perform songs of love. During dinner, chamber, jazz and Broadway instrumentalists Paradisa! will perform.

Name change: The annual Valentine's weekend event, formerly known as "Blush," has a name change this year. Ruacho said that "Blush and Bashful" is a reference to the movie Steel Magnolias, a gay favorite, where Julia Roberts' character describes her wedding colors as "blush and bashful."

Committee members: Besides Ruacho, committee members are Nick Capaz, Dr. Thomas Durisek, Andrew Feheley and Dean McAdams.

Echo Magazine is among the sponsors for "Blush and Bashful."    -E
