Boys to Men concert will feature youth singers and male choruses

More than 400 singers are expected to participate when members of local school choirs join men's chorus for the annual Boys to Men Concert.

The event, sponsored by the Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix, will be Nov. 5 at the Camelback Bible Church in Paradise Valley.

Also participating in the celebration of the male voice will be the Arizona State University Men's Chorus, Phoenix Metropolitan Men's Chorus, Spirit of Phoenix and the men of the Phoenix Chorale.

The concert is part of a day-long choral festival that aims to promote community-wide access to choral training and development for male singers from high schools and junior high schools.

"The teachers who bring their students to the festival tell me again and again how their students talk about the event for months," said Dr. Brook Larson, Orpheus artistic director.

Marla Stringham, chair of the Performing Arts Department at Copper Canyon High School in Glendale, agreed. She plans to bring about a dozen students to this year's festival after they did extra rehearsals so they learn the repertoire for the mass choir pieces.

"I continually teach my students to use music as a tool to help them get through difficult times in life," Stringham said. "I take them to this event where they will see that making music is something that can be done for a lifetime. It can help them to realize the importance of music in life."

Guest directors Ron Carpenter, artistic director of the Phoenix Children's Chorus and new director at Dobson High School, and Bart Evans, who recently retired as choir director at Dobson High School, will facilitate the rehearsals of the mass choir.

The mass choir will perform "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen," "Come Travel with Me" and "Star of the County Down."

Individual groups will perform "Not While I'm Around" from Sweeney Todd, "Dirait-on" and "When You've Got A Song In Your Heart."

In a change from previous years, choir members will wear casual uniforms rather than tuxedos.    -E
