Valley Clubs plan parties to mark the start of the new year
Partygoers will be looking for something unique when they go out to celebrate New Year's Eve, according to managers of clubs in the Valley.
"People are looking for parties that are different from last year," said Jeff Perales, manager of Kobalt. "People always have higher expectations than any other day."
But there are also traditions, so for New Year's Eve clubs will have noisemakers and party hats ready for those who venture out to dance or see a show.
DJ Stiletto Shank, who will DJ at the Rock on New Year's Eve, said people are more willing to let loose during the holiday. He said people "push it to the limit" on New Year's Eve, then start their resolutions the next day.
Mike Fornelli, owner of BS West, said that many clubgoers want to find one place to stay for the night, especially since law enforcement personnel are out in large numbers on New Year's Eve.
John Martinez, owner of Karamba Nightclub, said he expects a full house. "Everyplace gets busy because people want to go somewhere," he said.

Tucson New Year's Eve party is fundraiser for Wingspan
By Megan Wadding
There will be a cruise ship atmosphere when Wingspan stages its second annual NightThing New Year's Eve celebration.
The event, with the theme Bon Voyage: Sailing into 2012 Together, will be Dec. 31 at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort and Spa in Tucson.
The fundraiser for Wingspan, the Tucson LGBT community center, will be held in a ballroom representing four international destinations — Paris, with the Eiffel Tower; Greece, with ancient column ruins; Japan, with a dragon; and Brazil with Carnival inspirations. Cocktails will be designed for each country represented.
"The theme was chosen to inspire awe," said Benjamin McDonald, the event's committee chair.
Entertainment will include performances by Wild Women, Diane Van Deurzen and Lisa Otey. There will be a four-course meal, light show, DJ and dancing. At midnight, there will be a champagne toast.
Another highlight will be a casino, with winnings turned into tickets for raffle prizes.
McDonald said he became involved after attending the first NightThing last year. "I saw such value in the event for the entire community. It's unlike any other event because it's all about celebrating our community. I had the best New Year's Eve of my life," McDonald said.
Bunny Fufu, who moved from Tucson to Las Vegas, is returning to be emcee for the evening. "The greatest thing about celebrating with our community to ring in the New Year ... is the complete comfort of attending an event and being yourself; not worrying about who you're dancing with, who's hand you're holding and of course, who you kiss when the clock strikes 12," Fufu said. -E
