Community center to be featured in public service announcements

The 1 Voice LGBT Community Center is expected to be featured in a series of public service announcements during February on the cable TV station Fox Sports Arizona.

Jimmy Gruender, chair of the 1 Voice board, said that Fox Sports Arizona selected the community center as its monthly non-profit organization to be featured in the PSAs.

Gruender said that the PSAs could air up to 300 times during the month. The exposure is free to the community center, but Gruender estimated the value of the airtime and necessary production work to be about $50,000.

Public service announcements are part of a broadcast outlet's requirements to meet Federal Communication Commission licensing standards.

Gruender noted that the PSAs on Fox Sports Arizona will expose the community center to an audience that might not be familiar with 1 Voice. The PSAs come at a time when the professional sports world has been grappling with LGBT issues.

Gruender said Fox Sports Arizona became interested in the community center after an employee at the station came out and suggested that 1 Voice be thex subject of the PSAs.

At the 1 Voice board's Jan. 23 meeting, the group approved several other outreach projects, including joining the Seventh Avenue Merchant's Association, the merchants group that represents the area where the center is located.

The board also authorized participation in February's Willo Home Tour, Melrose on Seventh Street Fair and the RoadRunner Regional Rodeo. The board allocated up to $1,000 toward participation in April's Phoenix Pride festival and parade.

Finance report

A profit and loss statement for 2011 presented to the board showed that the center had an income of $85,240 for the year. Donation revenue totaled $40,521, the bulk of which came from in-kind donations. The center received $8,770 in single donations, $3,010 in pledges, $3,656 from the "Save Our Center" campaign and $3,705 from community fundraisers.

The biggest single source of income was $21,019 from a grant from Magellan Health Services, which was discontinued early last year. Other income sources included event revenue and a space rental.

The center's expenses for 2011 totaled $85,643. The biggest expense was $20,301 for payroll for staff positions that were discontinued early last year. Rent for the center totaled $15,800.    -E
