Drag bingo to raise funds for Melonhead Foundation

Drag performers will host a night of bingo and entertainment to raise money to help support families that have children with cancer.

The Melonhead Foundation is hosting its fifth annual Drag Bingo Oct. 15 at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Resort Pavilion in Chandler. The theme of the event is "It's not your grandmother's bingo."

Nicholas Yale, a board member of the foundation and one of the event's hosts, said Drag Bingo is the only time each year he dresses in drag. "We often hear from parents what a godsend this foundation is, and what a difference it makes in their healing process," Yale said. "That is why I do it. I cannot think of a greater cause for me to lend a hand to."

In addition to 10 rounds of bingo, a ticket to the event includes food and a bingo bag with dauber. There will be a cash bar.

Entertainment will include performances from the "Melonhead Rainbow Girls." "The performers have all committed to out-do each other," Yale said.

The fun will continue with a pre-Halloween costume contest with prizes. "We have a contest for scariest, sexiest, most original, funniest and best overall costume," Yale said.

This year the event will initiate a "Minute to Win It" game. "We will pull up a few unlucky men, give them a bucket of drag, and give them two minutes to make themselves pretty," Yale said. "We have several wives who will be signing their very straight husbands up for this game, so a good time is assured."

The Melonhead Foundation was started by Deb Leone, whose daughter Melanie died 19 years ago of leukemia. The foundation works to support the needs of children with cancer and their families.

"We love Drag Bingo because it is so much fun," Leone said. "Laughter and joy while involved with such a devastating process as childhood cancer brings balance."

Last year the event was attended by 300 people, and this year 400 are expected.    -E
