Phoenix Police are investigating an attack that left a local drag performer hospitalized for several days.

Chris Zizzo, who performs as drag queen Savannah Stevens, is recovering after the attack that occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 19.

Zizzo's partner, Wes Eichsteadt, said the incident ocurred after he and Zizzo met a man who was unknown to them at Cruisin' 7th, where Zizzo had performed earlier in the evening. At about 1 a.m., they went to the suspect's room at the Budget Suites of America on Indian School and Seventh Avenue.

The attack occurred after the suspect accused Zizzo and Eichsteadt of theft, Eichsteadt said. The incident ended at about 3:30 a.m. when another man came to the scene and encouraged the suspect to let the men go, he said.

Eichsteadt said he drove Zizzo to Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in central Phoenix and hospital personnel called police.

Eichsteadt said that it's expected that Zizzo will need plastic surgery to repair facial damage sustained in the attack. Eichsteadt said Zizzo's head was split open in two places and he also suffered skull fractures and a broken nose. He was out of the hospital by Jan. 25.

Eichsteadt was also injured in the incident and was treated at the hospital and released.

Chris Wilson, the detective who serves as the police department's liaison to the LGBT community, said that incident is being investigated as an aggravated assault.

Several days after the attack, Wilson said there had been no arrests. He said that the incident is not classified as a hate crime.

Eichsteadt said that Zizzo wanted to thank the community for its support. In the days after the attack, shows to raise funds for Zizzo's medical expenses were staged by drag performers, including Celia Putty and Barbra Seville.

Stevens is a member of the AZ Gender Outlaws troupe that performs at the Rock.    -E
