Five community leaders will be recognized during a gala to benefit the 1 Voice LGBT Community Center.

Community center names five to be recognized at gala

Five community leaders will be recognized with awards during the 1 Voice LGBT Community Center's gala.

The event, titled "All That Glitters," will be Nov. 19 at the Embassy Suites North in Phoenix. The evening will include cocktails, dinner, a silent auction and an awards ceremony.

Awards will be presented to:

  • Gail Loose, program director for the Tumbleweed Youth program, will receive the Ally Award, which recognizes contributions of LGBT allies.
  • Bill MacDonald, founder of Equality Arizona and a member of the Phoenix Pride board, will receive the Legacy Award, which celebrates long-term work of community members.
  • Chris Wilson, the Phoenix Police Department's liaison to the LGBT community, will receive the Social Justice Award, which recognizes individuals who have worked for full equality under the law.
  • Jimmy Gruender, local community activist and chair of the 1 Voice board, will receive the Impact Award, which recognizes individuals who work for change in society to benefit the LGBT community.
  • Marisa Zelaya Tristan, vice chair of the 1 Voice board, will recive the Rocco Menagaule Award, which is named for the 1 Voice founder and recognizes a member of the board who has made a significant contribution to the community center.

The gala's featured speaker will be Kim Pearson, co-founder and executive director of TransYouth Family Allies. She is the mother of a transgender child and an educator on gender diversity in children.

Host for the event will be drag entertainer Lady Christian, who is reigning Empress VI of the Imperial Court of Arizona.

The Voices of the Desert and Desert Overture concert band will perform.
