HRC event for women will have Mardi Gras theme

An annual event for women organized by the local chapter of the Human Rights Campaign will have a Mardi Gras theme.

Her HRC will be Jan. 14 at LGO in Phoenix.

"Mardi Gras stands for celebration and this night will be no exception," said Shelia Kloefkorn, one of the event's organizers. "Her HRC is a great event for ladies looking to enjoy time with friends in a beautiful setting, meet new people and have a great time. It is truly a celebration of all women — lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight."

Kloefkorn promised music, food, games and prizes. "Our friends from the Phoenix Mercury will be on hand for raffle prizes and even a dating game," she said.

With chapters in more than 30 cities, HRC organizes Her events around the country and the money raised goes to support the work that the organization does on both a local and national level as the nation's largest LGBT civil rights organization.

Claiming more than a million members and supporters, HRC works through grassroots and lobbying efforts to achieve equality for the LGBT community.

Her HRC has been bringing women together in the Valley for the past eight years, with past events including premiere screenings of The L Word and live musicians at the Cash Inn Country.

Kelley Densham, who has attended the event in the past, encouraged others to try it out. "Her HRC is an amazing unique event that is different from any other HRC event," she said. "It caters strictly to the women of our community and offers a sense of camaraderie, and it is a whole lot of fun to boot."

Upcoming HRC events include a workshop on Feb. 25 in which HRC will partner with the Latino community to help legal permanent residents complete their N-400 citizenship application.

The Phoenix chapter will host the local HRC Gala dinner on March 24.

Echo Magazine is among the sponsors for Her HRC.
