HIV/AIDS Groups Benefit

Two HIV/AIDS groups to benefit from Boy of Leather event

By Meg Sneed

Two HIV/AIDS groups to benefit from Boys of Leather event

Two organizations serving the Valley's HIV/AIDS community will benefit from an event to be sponsored by the Phoenix Boys of Leather.

Wax-a-Bear, Stuff-a-Turkey will be Nov. 19 at the Anvil Leather/Fetish Bar.

The event will benefit Logan's Playground, a project for children impacted by HIV/AIDS at the Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS, and the Joshua Tree Freeing Program, which provides food for those in need living with HIV/AIDS.

Shannon Vieth, the founder of the Wax-a-Bear, Stuff-a-Turkey, said the event was started in order to achieve the group's goals of being more service oriented to the community as well as providing a fun event for the holidays.

Now in its third year, Vieth said the idea for Wax-a-Bear grew out of a joke when his friend Oscar Solis told Vieth he was so hairy that a leather daddy would pay to shave his chest.

Vieth took the idea and created the event in which patrons bid to for the chance to pull wax strips from a bear's chest in front of the bar audience. The waxing auctions of seven men will be emceed by a member of the leather community and are supervised by Ethan Murray, of E's Urban Hair.

Last year, the event added Stuff-a-Turkey, a food drive for Joshua Tree, and the event was moved to the weekend before Thanksgiving in order to provide food before the holiday.

Last year's event raised $1,200 and collected 100 food items.

This year, a Wax-a-Bear raffle has been added, with the grand prize of travel package to attend the 2012 International Mister Leather in Chicago.

The Phoenix Boys of Leather is a social network of self-identified "leather boys." The group works to serve, support and enrich the leather community. The group also hosts of Gear Night on the last Saturday of the month at Anvil Bar.
