Leather Contest

Mr. Phoenix Leather 2012 will be named in January.

By Alexis Getscher

Contest will name 2012 Mr. Phoenix Leather

The ideal contestant for Mr. Phoenix Leather 2012 will uphold "the ideals of trust, honor and respect that the leather community holds dear," according to Kenneth Anthony, co-producer of the local contest.

The third annual Mr. Phoenix Leather contest will be Jan. 7 at Anvil in Phoenix.

Anthony said the winner will represent the Phoenix community as a whole, with emphasis on the LGBT and leather communities.

Contestants gather points as they are scored in five categories — social presence, speech and formal wear, on-stage presence and physique, social interaction at a meet-and-greet and a closed interview with the judges.

Among the judges will be the 2011 Mr. Phoenix Leather, Mitch Mitchell.

The winner is required to do at least two fundraisers for the travel fund, which helps pay for their trip to compete in Mr. International Leather 2012, which takes place in May in Chicago. One charity fundraiser is also required.

Anthony said that the number of contestants has grown each year since the contest was established in 2009.

The contest is one of several events that will take place over the weekend

Jan. 5: Cigar social at Plazma.
Jan. 6: Meet-and-greet at Kobalt and a bus bar tour that will provide transportation to Plazma, Apollo's, Bunkhouse and Anvil.
Jan. 7: Leather Happy Hour at Apollo's prior to the competition.
Jan. 8: Brunch at Bunkhouse and victory party at Plazma.     -E
