One of Hollywood's cult classics will be presented as a sing-along screening to benefit Grand Canyon Performing Arts.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be shown Oct. 15 at Memorial Hall at Steele Indian School Park. Those attending are encouraged to wear costumes.

"It's a cost-effective way of doing a fundraiser that's fun for everyone," said Marc Gaston, artistic director of Grand Canyon Performing Arts. The organization is home to the Phoenix Metropolitan Men's Chorus.

Adapted from a rock musical stage play and originally released in 1975, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a parody of B-movies, science fiction and horror films. It stars Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick.

The film gained popularity as a midnight movie with audience participation. It features songs like "The Time Warp," "Sweet Transvestite," "Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me" and "Dammit Janet."

Gaston said his organization staged a movie sing-along for the first time last spring with The Sound of Music. "We think The Rocky Horror Picture Show will have a little more appeal across the age range," he said.

Gaston said he hopes for about 200 people to attend the screening. Memorial Hall can hold up to 300 people.

Bunkhouse is donating the bar for the evening, Gaston said. Admission includes a cocktail or soda and popcorn. Additional concessions can be purchased.

During an intermission, a costume contest winner will be determined by audience applause, Gaston said. The event will also feature a silent auction.

Grand Canyon will do a sing-along benefit with the movie Grease on March 31.    -E
