Pentecostal group that caters to LGBT community to meet in Scottsdale

A Pentecostal group that caters to the LGBT community will offer workshops and worship during a conference to be staged in Arizona.

The Fellowship of Reconciling Pentecostals International will have its 11th annual conference Feb. 16-19 in Scottsdale.

Randy Duncan, the group's chief presiding presbyter, said that the Reconciling Pentecostals formed in 2000. He said the group has 10 affiliated congregations nationwide, most led by gay ministers who had to leave or were kicked out of the Pentecostal church.

The network of ministers and churches affirms LGBT people by educating its members and those with gay family members that God does not condemn a person for their sexual identity.

Duncan, of LaPorta, Ind., said the Reconciling Pentecostal Assembly in Scottsdale has about 50 members and meets at the Scottsdale Congregational United Church of Christ.

Like the traditional Pentecostals, the Reconciling Pentecostals are known for "exuberant worship," Duncan said.

Duncan said the Pentecostals' attitude toward homosexuality is akin to Don't Ask, Don't Tell. He said most, but not all, of the members of the Reconciling Pentecostals are gay, but added, "We don't want to be called a gay church."

The annual conference is open to the public and Duncan said in the past the meetings have attracted from 100 to 150 people who are pastors, congregational members, LGBT friendly groups and prospective members.

The theme for this year's conference is "Bring Back the Joy." It will include worship services, educational seminars, fellowship and ordination of clergy.

Registration fee for the conference is $50.    -E
