Pride plans appeal for funds for its Community Foundation

The Phoenix Pride board is planning an appeal to the community to raise funds for the Pride Community Fund, which provides scholarships and grants.

At Pride's annual meeting on Dec. 12, board members said they are preparing a letter to be sent to the festival's vendors and exhibitors requesting donations for the fund.

Bill MacDonald, Pride treasurer, said the group would also reach out to individuals to help build the fund.

The fund, administered by the Arizona Community Foundation, provided 10 scholarships of $1,500 in 2010. Board members said they hope to award up to 15 scholarships in 2011.

The fund recently announced four grants totaling $35,000 to four community organizations.

Pride finances

MacDonald reported that the organization is on a sound financial footing.

In the fiscal year ending Aug. 31, Pride reported income of $1,227,937, mostly derived from events. The report showed the foundation had an income of $87,263.

The report showed expenses of $1,241,701, with the majority of the funds going for programs. Administration and general expenses totaled $154,147. Foundation expenses came to $97,531

MacDonald noted that Pride ended the fiscal year with assets of $340,256, an amount he said served as insurance against a financial crisis that could occur if an event failed.

The report does not reflect Pride's acquisition of the Rainbows Festival, which occurred after the fiscal year ended.

New board members

The board named six new members — Stacey Jay Cavaliere, Luisa Valdez, Vincent Medina, Matthew Harris, Tucker Parkinson and Angie Guerra.

Paul Roark is retiring from the board after being termed out after six years. The board accepted the resignation of Becca Daltroff, who had served since May.

Lawrence Moore, Bill MacDonald and Katy June were re-elected to the board. Moore was re-elected chair and MacDonald was re-elected treasurer. Brenda Hackman was named secretary and Michael Soto was elected member-at-large to the executive committee.

Other continuing board members are Shannon Lack, Ken McKenzie, Matt Thomas, Julie Dempsey and Ron Lindblad.

The Pride board regularly meets on the second Monday of the month.
