Chely Wright named Pride grand marshal, festival headliner

Out country music singer/songwriter Chely Wright will be celebrity grand marshal of the Phoenix Pride parade and perform as a headliner at the festival.

Brandi Sokolosky, Pride executive director, made the announcement Jan. 27 at the Desperado Film Festival at the screening of Wish Me Away, a documentary that follows the Nashville star's struggle to come out.

Sokolosky said that Wright would be grand marshal at the Pride parade, which will be held April 21. That night, Wright will be a headliner at the festival, Sokolosky said.

Wright is known for hits like "Single White Female," "Jezebel" and "Shut Up and Drive."

In 2010, Wright was the first country music artist to come out as a lesbian with a media splash that included her memoir, Like Me, and TV appearances on The Today Show, Oprah and Ellen.

The movie that follows her journey has been making the rounds of film festivals and is expected to have a theatrical release in the spring.

Since coming out, Wright has become an LGBT activist and last year married Lauren Blitzer. But Nashville seems to have abandoned the country star.

Sokolosky said that Wright would serve as celebrity grand marshal along with Gerardo Higginson, community affairs director of Univision in Phoenix.

Pride announced that local radio personality Beth McDonald, who had previously been named celebrity grand marshal, would not be able to participate due to a scheduling conflict.

Earlier, Pride named Rich Zavala and Jamie Henderson-Mays community grand marshals and Max Jannsen youth grand marshal.    -E
