Tucson auction to raise funds for AIDS foundation

Silent and live auctions and entertainment will be the focus of the 23rd annual Jerôme Beillard Festival for Life benefiting the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF) in Tucson.

Carol Cullivan, associate development director at SAAF, said more than 700 are expected to attend when the event is staged Nov. 19 at the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center.

Cullivan said last year's Festival for Life raised $100,000, with proceeds going to SAAF's support services for people living with HIV/AIDS.

The auction will feature a collection of artwork. "We have a great selection of art from our traditional well-known Tucson artists as well as some new artists," Cullivan said. "We also have a few national artists who contribute to the event.

The auction also includes designer Christmas trees, menorahs, gift baskets, sculptures, gift certificates, trips, celebrity items and collectibles.

Among the items offered will be paper prayers, a Japanese tradition of giving small pieces of artwork on strips of paper to inspire good health.

Cullen said the paper prayers to be auctioned "have been created to express hope and inspire good health for those living with HIV/AIDS."

Entertainers during the evening will include Flam Chen, the Street Minstrels and classical guitarist Jose Louis Puerta. Lupita Murio, of KVOA TV, and Bobby Rich, of MIX FM Radio, will be emcees for the evening. There will be appetizers and a cash bar.

The event started in 1989 as the Festival of Trees, a fundraiser for the People with AIDS Coalition of Tucson (PACT) that featured an auction of decorated holiday trees and wreaths.

In 1992, the event became known as the Festival for Life. In 1995, PACT's co-founder and executive director, Jerôme Beillard, died from AIDS complications and Festival for Life was renamed to honor his work.    -E
