Fabulous Faygeleh Film Series to screen three LGBT movies

An AIDS documentary, a story about a long-time lesbian couple and a musical will be screened as part of the Fabulous Faygeleh LGBT Film Series Jan. 22 in Tucson.

The films are part of the 21st annual Jewish International Film Festival, sponsored by the Tucson Jewish Community Center.

Lynn Davis, director of arts and culture at the community center, said the Tucson event is the only Jewish Film Festival she knows of that has dedicated programming for LGBT films. "We're really proud of this series," she said.

The films were selected by longtime partners Bob Polinsky and Bob Nichol, who created the Fabulous Faygeleh Film Series.

Faygeleh means "gay" in Yiddish.

Films to be shown are:

  • We Were Here: A look back on the arrival of AIDS in San Francisco, the 2011 film reflects on the impact of the disease and how it brought the community together. Davis said the film recognizes the work of pioneers in the fight against AIDS and offers a history lesson to younger generations.
  • Edie and Thea: A Very Long Engagement: This film is the story of a lesbian couple together for 42 years before finally being allowed to marry legally shortly before one of them dies. Davis said that the 2009 film is timely in light of the national debate about marriage equality. "It's a powerful portrayal of a long relationship," she said. "It's a beautiful glimpse into these people's lives."
  • Mary Lou (Tamid Oto Chalom): This 2009 musical was made as a series for Israeli television and directed by Eytan Fox. Based on the songs of Israeli pop star Svika Pick, Davis said it's billed as the Israeli Glee. It depicits a young gay man who searches for the mother who deserted him, but discovers himself. "It's a story of self-awareness and coming of age," Davis said. The first four episodes of the series will be screened.

The Jewish International Film Festival will screen 23 films from Jan. 12 to 22. Davis said that the LGBT series is screened at the Grand Crossroads Cinema in the hopes of attracting a broader audience from the community.

While movies appealing to a niche audience can be found on DVD, Davis said that a film festival offers a chance to see a group of movies relating to several aspects of one theme.

A festival allows those attending to share the experience with others, Davis said. "It makes an event out of going to the movies," she said.

Davis said that the Fabulous Faygeleh Film Series is supported by the LGBT-Straight Alliance of the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona and the Arizona Commission on the Arts.    -E
