Tennis Alliance sponsors second annual Cactus Open event

Up to 100 tennis players will compete in five divisions at the second annual Cactus Open tennis tournament sponsored by the Phoenix Tennis Alliance.

The tournament will be Oct. 14-16 at the Phoenix Tennis Center.

The event is formatted with Open, A, B, C and D divisions, with both single and doubles play, according to Franco Dias, tournament director.

Events start Oct. 13 with a draw party. There will be an elimination round in all divisions with a consolation round offered for first match losers in singles. Round Robin format will be used when there are not enough entries for a regular elimination round.

Dias said players are expected from around the country and even overseas. Entries are open until Oct. 5.

"I encourage anyone to participate in our tournament," Dias said. "It is a great way to exercise, meet a great group of people and advance your tennis game."

Spectators are welcome to attend the competition and also can attend a tournament social from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Coronado Café. During the social there will be a charity raffle with proceeds donated to the Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS. Dias said $1,500 was raised for Southwest Center last year.

The Phoenix Tennis Alliance is an LGBT tennis group that was formed 15 years ago. The group plays at 7 p.m. Fridays and Sundays.

Echo Magazine is among the sponsors for the Cactus Open. -E
