Volleyball tournament to attract teams from around the U.S. and Canada

Twenty-one volleyball teams from the U.S. and Canada are expected to compete in the second annual Volley del Sol tournament sponsored by the Desert Volleyball Alliance.

The event will be Feb. 18-19 at Arizona State University in Tempe.

The tournament is one of more than 25 held nationwide that are sanctioned by the North American Gay Volleyball Association (NAGVA).

Teams competing in Tempe are expected from Arizona, Wisconsin, Ohio, Texas, Nevada, New York, Washington, Massachusetts, Oregon and Canada.

The indoor tournament will follow the rules of USA Volleyball, with teams divided into B, BB, A and AA divisions, with AA being the highest skill level.

On Feb. 18, teams will play in pool play, with a double-elimination-style tournament on Feb. 19. Teams will earn medals for first, second and third place. Spectators are welcome to attend both days.

When Desert Volleyball Alliance was formed in 2009, organizers had the vision of hosting a tournament.

"Many of the organizers had played in NAGVA tournaments across the nation and we wanted to share the great experiences that we had with gay organized power volleyball, with our hometown," said Eric Reyes, Desert Volleyball commissioner.

Anyone interested in playing with Desert Volleyball Alliance is encouraged to join. Practice will resume in April. League play is on Wednesday and Thursday nights in A and B divisions. The A level is determined by displaying at least two solid specialty skills in the game. such as passing, setting, blocking and hitting.

Players who do not already have a team are still able to join by being placed on a sub list and joining in with teams throughout the season.

Players can also join in on play when Desert Volleyball Alliance hosts open court Saturdays. B level play is from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and A level play is from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

League play and open court are at the Sports Club at City Square, 4000 N. Central Ave., Phoenix.

NAGVA was founded in 1981 to promote and develop the sport of volleyball in the LGBT community. The organization has more than 3,000 members. NAGVA's annual championship will be May 24-27 in Las Vegas. -E
