By Luis Garcia
FLAGSTAFF —On July 16, the Coconino County Attorney charged Travis Reiner, 24, with a felony assault for the alleged anti-gay attack on 25-year-old Michel Brown following Pride in the Pines festivities June 21 in Flagstaff.
If found guilty of a felony, Reiner, who is from Flagstaff, could receive an enhanced sentence under Arizona’s hate crime statute.
“We are pleased with the sensitivity and professionalism that the Coconino County Attorney’s office and local authorities have demonstrated during this investigation,” said Equality Arizona Executive Director Barbara McCullough-Jones. “We continue to stand with the victims, their families, and the Flagstaff community in seeking justice in this case. Equality Arizona continues to partner with city leaders to create an environment where everyone who visits, lives or works in Flagstaff is safe and free from bias and discrimination, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.”
Reiner and four of his friends were arrested after allegedly shouting anti-gay slurs and attacking at least two people after Flagstaff’s Pride in the Pines festival.
The other three men, Flagstaff resident Michael Van Roteyn, 24; Mark Greinke II, also 24, from Sun City; and Christopher Rose, a 26-year-old from Englewood, Colo., were charged with disorderly conduct,
It was the first reported bias crime this year in the city of Flagstaff.
McCullough-Jones added Equality Arizona would continue to partner with city leaders to “create an environment where everyone who visits, lives or works in Flagstaff is safe and free from bias and discrimination, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.”
